Getting Started With Loose Leaf TeaUpdated 4 days ago
New to loose leaf tea? You only need tea, hot water, and a way to strain the leaves. Start with one blend that matches the kind of routine you want to build, then give yourself time to learn what you enjoy.
What you need
- Loose leaf tea
- Filtered water
- A kettle or another way to heat water
- A tea infuser, strainer, or teapot
- A cup or mug
How to make your first cup
- Start with one level-to-rounded teaspoon of tea for every 8 ounces of water.
- Use boiling water, about 212°F (100°C), unless your product packaging says otherwise.
- Steep for 5 minutes or longer for most herbal teas, following the package instructions when they differ.
- Taste your tea and adjust the amount of tea or steeping time to make it stronger or lighter.
What should you expect?
Loose leaf tea can look and taste different from tea bags. Herbal blends may have unfamiliar flavors, so try the tea hot or over ice and give your palate time to adjust. You can also add more hot water if the flavor is too strong.
Store unused tea in an airtight container away from light, heat, moisture, and strong odors. If you are pregnant, taking medication, or under a doctor’s care, speak with your healthcare professional before using herbal tea.
